Lord Shiva created Kal Bhairav and sent him to Kashi or Mosha Puri to remove sins of all followers, the reason why he is also known as paap bhakshak. This is the place where the Brahma hatya of Kal Bhairav vanished, hence he never left Kashi. Since then he protects devotees from their problems. It is also one of the most ancient temple of Varanasi. Kal Bhairav is the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva and he is known as the “Police Chief” or the Kotwal of city Varanasi. He guards the followers from all problems and frees them from sins. Kal Bhairav Temple is also found around Shakti Peethas as Lord Shiva had assigned the duty of protecting all the 51 Shakti Peethas in India and Indian Sub-continent. It is also believed that without his permission one cannot stay in Kashi. Worshipers who some to Varanasi, must visit Kal Bhairav Temple for his blessings.
